..under Royal Warrant 1500 clansmen had been raised by The Hon. Simon Fraser, Master of Lovat to comprise a Highland regiment.
Many of these men (including Simon Fraser) had fought against the English in the failed Scottish rebellion just over a decade earlier. They would now be fighting for the Crown in the distant lands of North America.
When a government official cast doubt upon the wisdom of manning a regiment with former rebels, General James Wolfe replied,
"If a Highlander gives his oath, he can be completely trusted".
The 78th Fraser Highlanders distinguished their regiment in the Seven Years War, a war which shaped the nation of Canada as it is today. The sieges and battles of Louisbourg, the Plains of Abraham, Ste. Foy, Montreal, and St. John's saw the honour and bravery of the "Fighting Frasers".

History
's final highland charge occurred on Canadian soil. In 1763 the 78th became the only Scottish regiment ever to be disbanded in a foreign land.

During preparations for Montreal's EXPO ' 67 two historic regiments - La Compagnie Franche
de la Marine and The 78th Fraser Highlanders - were re-raised for ceremonial and historical purposes. With garrisons currently existing across the North American continent, the 78th Fraser Highlanders of today soldier on, providing a living connection to Canadian and Scottish history, and an example of the charitable, proud and versatile Highland spirit.
